Purple Swamp Hen

Australian Swamphen or Purple Swamphen This bird is very common in the Newcastle area, where we live, mainly around inland lakes, ponds and swamps. In fact it is found almost everywhere on the Australian continent, except in large parts of Western and Southern Australia. We have quite a few of them in the local protected wetland. They mainly feed on various kinds of plants.
